More Palm Springs on Film
In a previous post, I mentioned my Christmas 2024 trip to Palm Springs. In addition to getting some much-needed warmth and sunshine, I was excited to photograph some of the wonderful Mid-century modern architecture in the area. I planned to photograph the architecture using Kodak film, which I thought would give a nice retro feeling to the photos.
Prior to any trip, I do a lot of research. In this case, I followed the Instagram accounts of others who were photographing architecture in this area. I also searched blogs, virtually drove through neighborhood using Google street view, and looked for websites showing architectural tours. I then built a map of places to visit.
There are a group of chalet-style houses that architect Charles DuBois designed to stand out from their neighbors. They are often called “Swiss Miss Houses”. Here’s one of the more famous homes in the Vista Las Palmas neighborhood of Palm Springs:
This is another Charles DuBois home from 1962. I loved the 1960s Mustang parked in the garage, color matched to the front door of the home:
I wasn’t able to find much information about this pink house located on a corner in the same neighborhood as the others. It appeared to be for sale at the time of our visit. I really liked being able to include the mountains in the background:
My hope is to one day visit Palm Springs during one of their modernism weeks, so that I can go on some tours of these fantastic homes.
Still my favorite way to start the day are your pictures. I’m inspired by the beauty that surrounds us and what other amazing places are left to explore. Thank you. Keep Snappin’
