Dawn in Atrani

I recently returned from a week in Italy.  I decided to revisit some favorite spots to work on a film photography project that revolves around beach umbrellas (more on that in future posts).  I flew into Naples, then made my way to Atrani.  I’ve been to Atrani several times now, and it continues to be one of my favorite places in Italy.  It’s a cute town just a short walk from the more popular Amalfi.  There’s a small square, a few restaurants, a nice beach, and not much else to see.  But it’s so very quiet compared to the other towns along the Amalfi coast — particularly in the summer, when I was traveling.

I stayed in a small apartment close to the beach.  I got up early each morning to try for a few sunrise photos.  Sunrises are hard here, because the sun comes up behind mountains, and the sun is not particularly well aligned with the town (mostly, it’s coming up over the water).  Still, when you get a good sunrise, the color will spread, so that is what you hope for.

On my second morning in Atrani, we had such a sunrise.  I was positioned on the road between Atrani and Amalfi, and a beautiful pink and purple light was illuminating the sky and reflecting off the water:

I ended up taking this photo with my Sony RX-100, a small point and shoot camera.  I had struggled with what gear to bring.  With the trip mostly being about film, I decided not to bring my larger mirrorless digital camera, instead going on with the pocketable RX-100.  I think it did a pretty good job!

I’ll have more Italy content coming, plus I still have plenty from France.  I also just returned from a weekend in Wildwood, New Jersey, where I was photographing motels.

I think Atrani was a village feature in the novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and featured in the latest remake of the movie. Beautifully shot!

I don’t know about Atrani, but there were certainly scenes in the film with Matt Damon that were shot on the island of Procida, which I also visited on this trip.
